If your car breaks down or you have a wreck on I-65 between Clanton and Pelham, South Calera Towing is the local tow company in the middle of that stretch. Our shop in Calera is about a mile from exit 228, so the interstate from the Peach Tower exit in Clanton up to Alabaster and Pelham is close. We answer 24 hours a day: (205) 668-0298.
A lot of the drivers we help on I-65 are not from here – a family from Michigan on the way to Panama City Beach, travelers seven hours from home. Several of our reviews are from them. This page is for you.
Right now: stay safe
- Get as far right as you can – onto the shoulder, ideally past the end of a guardrail or onto an exit ramp if the car still rolls.
- Hazard lights on. At night, keep the parking lights on too.
- Get out on the passenger side, away from traffic, and wait behind the guardrail or up the bank – not between your car and the traffic, and not in front of or behind the car.
- If anyone is hurt, or your car is in a travel lane, call 911. On I-65 the state troopers (Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) handle crashes.
- Don’t walk along the interstate to an exit for help.
Tell us where you are
The fastest way to be found on the interstate:
- Northbound or southbound (toward Birmingham or toward Montgomery).
- The mile marker – the small green signs on the right shoulder every mile. On this stretch the exit numbers match the mile markers.
- The last exit you passed, or a landmark (the Peach Tower in Clanton, the Shelby County Airport sign, the Highway 25 exit to Montevallo).
Not sure? Your phone’s map app shows where you are – read us the nearest cross street, exit or business name.

Alabama’s Move Over law
Alabama law requires drivers to move over a lane – or, if they can’t, slow down well below the speed limit – for stopped emergency vehicles and tow trucks with flashing lights. Please do it for every flashing light on the shoulder: on the interstate, the tow operator working on your car stands a few feet from 70-mph traffic.
If you are far from home
- Where should the car go? If you have a dealer or a shop you trust, we tow it there. If not, we can recommend shops in Calera and Alabaster, or keep the car at our shop while you decide.
- How do you get on? You can ride with us in the tow truck. We have driven families to a rental car counter and let travelers wait at our shop until family came to pick them up.
- Insurance and motor clubs: call them too – many reimburse a local tow. Keep our receipt.
